Spiral Movie Review 9 out of 10 Skulls Written by: Suspiria_89 I’m not a huge fan of psychological thrillers so I didn’t have very high expectations the first time I watched Spiral. But this movie absolutely blew me away. I loved everything about the movie. The plot, the amazing acting, the gloomy atmosphere and the strange but very effective soundtrack is what makes Spiral such a great psychological thriller. Plot: Joel David Moore stars with Zachary Levi (Chuck) and Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia and THE GRUDGE 2) in the harrowing story of a shy and possibly disturbed telemarketer/painter, his arrogant longtime friend and boss, and the carefree new co-worker whose love may offer a portrait of normalcy. But in a life scarred by dark secrets, can the truth be the most horrifying pose of all? If you are looking for a blood soaked gore fest, you better look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a clever and well made thriller, this movie if for you. I was shocked that the director of Hatchet directed this movie. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with Hatchet, but Spiral is just so much better made. It doesn’t rely on extreme violence or gore, instead it relies on atmosphere and terrific acting. Joel David Moore perfectly portrays a anti social mentally disturbed psycho and Amber Tamblyn also does a fantastic job playing a very happy and unusual character who at times seems to be a little mentally disturbed herself, but in a very different way than Mason. The soundtrack and the atmosphere are both a perfect fit for this movie. The soundtrack really helps give it a great atmosphere, that and the gloomy Seattle location. The jazz music fits Mason’s personality and there’s something unsettling about it. I’ve heard a lot people say that they were bored watching Spiral, but this is certainly not my case. The characters are so interesting, and I was paying such close attention that I didn’t even want to blink. And the movie unfolds at a terrific pace. Then it hits you with a fantastic double twist ending. Even though I saw it coming, I still loved it. There are two reasons I didn’t give this movie a 10/10 rating. The first reason is Amber’s character. She is a fairly attractive girl and has a nice(sometimes crazy) personality. I don’t see why she would waste her time with someone as strange and unattractive as Mason, It just didn’t seem realistic. The next problem is with Mason himself. Joel David Moore did a great job playing Mason, but at times he reminded me a little to much of Napoleon Dynamite LOL Overall Spiral is a very well made movie and one of the best I’ve seen in a very long time. I highly recommend that you buy or rent Spiral. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed. |
