Why Yvonne Strahovski Deserves an Emmy

| By now, most Chuck fans know about the fan-based campaign dedicated to getting Chuck’s leading lady, Yvonne Strahovski, an Emmy nomination. Since the campaign’s creation, Emmy4Yvonne.com has acquired supporters from all over the world, all looking to get Strahovski the recognition she deserves. But exactly why does she deserve an Emmy? Her fans will argue that it is her versatility. Week after week, Strahovski continues to exemplify her range by bringing her character, Sarah Walker, to new emotional levels never before seen. In most recent episodes, Strahovski also proves herself to be quite hilarious (just watch the wedding dress montage in “Chuck vs. the First Bank of Evil” or her failed attempt to bond with Morgan in “Chuck vs. the Masquerade). Of course, her kick-ass demeanor and ability to seemingly fight absolutely anyone while dressed in skin-tight leather never hurts her popularity either. While I will argue that actors capable of Strahovski’s range are few and far between in television these days, her talent goes far beyond that of just being versatile. What makes Strahovski truly Emmy worthy is her ability to bring life and depth to a character that for nearly three seasons came dangerously close to being nothing more than a one-dimensional cliché. The fact is that while the show itself is incredibly creative and original, the concept of Sarah Walker as a character is not. A mysterious, sexy spy with a difficult past, struggling between personal desire and duty is nothing new. In fact, it’s pretty much a staple. Yet it is Strahovski’s subtle performance that brought depth to Sarah Walker and kept the character from becoming the typical cliché we’ve seen a hundred times over. Many will argue with this idea, but go back to first or second season and take Strahovski out of the equation and Sarah Walker falls flat. Plotlines allowed little growth for her character and most of her dialogue revolved around the spy world. There were moments where Sarah showed a more vulnerable side, but for the most part her role was scripted as the sexy spy who knew duty came first. Yet from the very beginning, Strahovski had us believing that there was so much more to Sarah. Through fleeting glances, facial expressions, and body language Strahovski exemplified Sarah’s desires, her longing for normality, pain, and inner turmoil caused by her ever growing affection for her asset, Chuck. Strahovski not only kept Sarah from becoming one-dimensional, she made her a real person and consequently one of the strongest characters of the show. The show did have moments that explored Sarah’s painful past and her struggle with the loneliness of being a spy. For example, in the episode “Chuck vs. the Delorean” we see the emotional turmoil that Sarah experiences with the return of her con-man father as she voices her pain and feelings of abandonment to Chuck. But nothing compares to the Sarah storylines of this current season. Many fans are referring to it as the “Season of Sarah Walker” and it’s true; Sarah’s character has grown more in just this season than the other three combined. Sarah’s exponential growth arguably began mid season three when her character finally got together with Chuck. Chuck’s character has always been the catalyst for growth in Sarah Walker. And growth for Sarah Walker means a chance for Strahovski to show us what she can really do. Strahovski’s ability to bring power to each performance and nail everything from the dramatic to the comedic scenes is truly award worthy. Her range however, as amazing as it may be, is really just the beginning. Strahovski may be blowing us away with her performance this season, but the truth is she’s been incredible since the beginning. She had us emotionally invested in a character that began as nothing more than an old storyline. That in itself deserves an Emmy. |
